So you saw The Inbetweeners movie and decided a lads’ holiday is in order? The travel industry is forecasting a surge in popularity for Malia and Magaluf this summer. Malia on the Greek island of Crete is where the film was set, and Magaluf in Spain is where the film was actually shot. South European resort areas are popular destinations for groups of men aged 18 to 30 looking for sun, sea, sand and clubbing. If you are looking for a little something different this summer, consider a city break in places like Krakow in Poland, Dubrovnik in Croatia, Tallinn in Estonia or Munich in Germany. There you will still have the chance to spend a lot of time outdoors and clubbing, but you are more likely to meet actual locals rather than others on holiday. Cities also have a larger variety of activities on offer that don’t all revolve around nightlife and meeting members of the opposite sex.
Holiday Activities
You could be doing a whole host of activities on holiday. Just make sure you set your alarm clocks in the morning and avoid spending the day cooped up in your hotel room. While the hotel pool may be tempting, did you really travel there to just lie sprawled on a sun lounger all day? Any destination has at least a few sights to see, and many things to do.
A lot of the most popular activities at seaside resorts are water sports. From water skiing to surfing to rafting, you are bound to find something for every guy in the group.
If you want to avoid water for a change, or if you have chosen to visit a city, check out some of the local visitor attractions. Museums and historic sights can be really interesting to discover. For example, the Soviet Museum in Tallinn is home to a fascinating exhibition of what life used to be like under Soviet rule. There are loads of great photo ops.
While abroad, be sure to give local cuisine a go. Unfortunately, the most popular resorts are known for bad international food so you might have to venture off the beaten track to try something truly authentic. This is another reason why cities are a good choice as you can find a larger array of eateries to choose from that serve more than burgers, and fish and chips.
In Poland, for example, you should definitely try pirogi or dumplings with fillings from cottage cheese to sauerkraut.
What to Pack
Wherever you go in the summer, sunscreen is a must. You do not want to end up red as a lobster like some of the boys did in The Inbetweeners. This is in no way a flattering look…
Pack a fair amount of toiletries and cologne. Summer weather can mean having to take two showers a day, particularly if you have planned a night out.
This is also a reason to pack more clothes than you would expect to wear. Fortunately, most hotels have laundry facilities so you can wash some items if really needed, but it is always best to plan for the worst.
Shorts are a good choice for daytime but some clubs have strict dress codes and may not let you in dressed in shorts. Throw a few pairs of chinos in your suitcase. They can be dressed up or down to suit any setting.
Checked mens shirts are still very much bang on trend this summer. Denim shirts and Hawaiian-print inspired shirts are also in. For daytime polo shirts are a fashionable choice.
And do not forget a pair or two of swim shorts, and a towel!
Last but certainly not least, put together a first aid kit. Painkillers are an absolute must if you exaggerate with the partying but still want to do something during the day. Pills to settle your stomach could also come in handy. And single guys should always remember condoms to avoid accidents.
