Getting More Power from Your Diesel Engine

Getting More Power from Your Diesel Engine

One reason to go diesel is for the extra power it provides, but even the strongest engine can use a little help to tow big loads. Towing a trailer for work or play to the hills up North or around Boise, Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell takes effort.  It is true, Idaho drivers put their vehicles’ towing capacity to the test. Now you can wring more towing capacity from your GMC-Chevy Duramax, Dodge-Cummins or Ford-Powerstroke engine with modifications to your frame, suspension or drive train. Keeping your engine in good working order also makes a difference to how much your truck can pull. Choosing the right hitch can give you more stability, too.
Your truck’s gross vehicle weight rating, or GVWR, is built into it by the manufacturer. It takes the weight of the truck and its maximum cargo capacity into account. While you can’t exceed your truck’s GVWR by much, a diesel engine parts store can provide you with the equipment you need to make the most of it. Switching out your suspension system to something more substantial can help you get the extra power you want to pull a loaded horse trailer or camper. Reinforcing your frame might make the difference between pulling a big load with effort and an easy drive.
According to Gage Burlingame, Master Diesel Technician at Gem State Diesel, your hitch is another important consideration.  He states, “When weight is distributed more evenly, your truck handles better and delivers more power for heavy payloads. A fifth-wheel hitch is one solution; a gooseneck hitch is another. Both of these hitches place the weight you’re towing toward the center of your vehicle rather than putting it all behind you. The standard ball hitch just isn’t enough for big jobs”.  Before you tow, it’s a good idea to talk with a diesel engine parts supplier about outfitting your truck with a hitch that helps both maximize power to two heavy trailers without straining your rig.
Your engine can only tow a trailer when it’s in good shape, so choose a diesel engine repair shop that specializes in the needs of GMC-Chevy Duramax, Dodge-Cummins and Ford-Powerstroke engines like a Gem State Diesel.   These types of facilities specialize in diesel engine repair from complete rebuilds to replacement of worn diesel fuel injection pumps or filtration systems.

Finally, when driving around in our higher elevation’s thin, cooler air… don’t forget to breathe! Hard-working diesel engines consume more oxygen, so your air filter also needs regular maintenance.  Likewise, a failing diesel fuel injection pump could be starving your engine of the fuel it needs when pulling those heavy loads whether you’re driving from Meridian to Caldwell, Boise to Nampa… Ontario to McCall and beyond.   Ask an expert about getting more power for your diesel truck engine.
