What a relief: A comedic road trip movie with humor and heart that never resorts to high-pitched, misanthropic slapstick. “The Guilt Trip” could have easily veered into silly territory by leaning on its gimmick of placing a doting mother and her self-conscious son in a small car and sending them on a cross-country road trip. Instead, director Anne Fletcher (“The Proposal”) maintains a tone that respects the complexity of a relationship of this magnitude.
Joyce Brewster (Barbra Streisand playing her role with delightful élan) introduces her son Andrew (a restrained Seth Rogen) to her friends as a traveling salesman. To which he rolls his eyes, for he is actually a degree-carrying chemist and inventor of the eco-friendly and FDA-approved cleaning product Scioclean. He plans to head out on a cross-country trip for appointments to sell his product at the corporate headquarters of big box stores.
Before his trek, he pays a visit to his mother for a night’s rest that becomes an uncomfortable revelation. Joyce confesses the origin of Andy’s name is her first love. Let the Oedipal complex rear its rich, ugly head. If ever a gulf existed between two kinds of people it may be that of an adult son and his post-menopausal mother. The baggage of such a relationship proves fertile ground for screenwriter Dan Fogelman (“Crazy, Stupid, Love”). Why Andy decides to invite his mother on this trip is touching if a tad convoluted. However, the beauty of this film is that it never feels exploitative of the relationship for cheap laughs.

This mother and son only mean well for one another to hilarious effect. Though Joyce offers salient advice in the marketing of his product, the well-educated Andy never seems to take her seriously. It comes from that undeniable gulf between mother and son. When they arrive at the Grand Canyon, at Joyce’s bucket-list insistence, both shrug it off after staring for a few seconds. It’s a brilliant symbolic moment, and “The Guilt Trip” is filled with many such resonant scenes. Its humor comes from its delight in irony and truth and harkens back to the great conversation comedies of Howard Hawks.

Though there are moments of broad comedy, like Joyce entering a challenge to eat a 4-and-half-pound steak for a free meal at a Texas steakhouse, the film also deals with the small things, like Andy trying to wrap his head around any man finding his mother attractive. “The Guilt Trip” culminates in a light sense of hope, but nothing ever definitive, as these two travelers in life continue on the road to reconciling a most complex relationship few films explore with such honesty and humor. The film may seem so tempered that it may not attract a huge audience, especially during the winter-hype of awards season. Unlike “The Proposal,” there are no big weddings and huge life-changing events, just a pair of characters who go through their own quiet, if humorous revelations together. It’s all about a tender humanizing not often explored in cinema between the closest of relatives.
