5 Easy Steps To Childproof Your Balcony Railings

5 Easy Steps To Childproof Your Balcony Railings

Many persons today, live in homes that were constructed with the old codes and their balconies may not be safe for young children. Your balcony railings today required to be at least 42” in height and should have a maximum space of 4” between railings, so as not to allow children to climb over it or go through it.
You can use products for child safety to retrofit the balcony railing and make it childproof within just an hour. One such product is KidShiled, which is a transparent, rigid, non-scratchable plastic kid safety product which has screws, cable ties, and hole punch. However, any safety product made for childproofing your balcony railings can be used.
To childproof your balcony railings you will need measuring tape, pencil and a KidShiled kit or any other child safety kit for balconies. After you have all you need, you will then need to follow the instructions below.

1: Use the measuring tape to measure the balcony railings length and height then buy the amount of KidShield you require as it is available in various lengths. Put two additional inches on the end of each, and another six inches where the wall and the balcony meets. Ensure that the you get an adequate height and no space should be at the bottom.
2: Spread the KidShield out on an even surface, and then use the pencil to pinpoint your measurements done in step 1 with it. Remove the protective paper and then cut it to fit the measurements. You should then round each corner to remove their sharpness.
3: Place KidShield up against the balusters and the railing and ensure that the additional lengths at the end are placed appropriately. Use the pencil to mark the side of each baluster. The holes for securing it will be where you have marked.
4: Punch the holes and then pull the cable ties through them, around the bars, then allow the ends to meet behind the outside bar on the railing. You should now fasten the ties, then remove the extras.
5: The KidShield ends should be screwed into a stud on the wall or an end post for maximum security. You can do this by drilling holes into the plastic and the wall or post at about 6” – 9”. Remove the KidShield then hammer the anchors on the wall into the drilled holes. Place back the KidShiels and line the holes above the anchors in the wall. Put a washer over the opening, and screw or drill screws tightly into the anchors on the wall. If this cannot be done due to metal posts, the ends can be secured to the posts with cable ties.
